village, Cook county, northeastern Illinois, U.S. South Holland is a suburb of Chicago, located along the Little Calumet River about 30 miles (50 km) south of downtown. Founded in 1847 by Dutch farmers, it was first called De Laage Prairie (“The Low Prairie”); it was renamed South Holland in 1870. The community developed after 1853, when the Illinois Central Railroad came through. Originally a truck-farming community, noted especially for its onion sets, South Holland has become mainly residential; there are also food processing and meatpacking facilities, and manufactures include window blinds, hardware, and packaging. The area was the setting for Edna Ferber (Ferber, Edna)'s novel So Big (1924). It is the seat of South Suburban (community) College (1927). The Midwest Carvers Museum features exhibits of wood carving. Inc. 1894. Pop. (1990) 22,105; (2000) 22,147.

district, administrative and historic county of Lincolnshire, east-central England, occupying an area of reclaimed marshland within the Fens. It borders the Wash (Wash, The), a shallow bay of the North Sea, to the northeast. The dry flatlands in the north along the Wash were formed as islands of silt interspersed with marshes when large stretches of silt penned in by glaciers of the Pleistocene Epoch piled up on the shores of a shallow inland sea. Flat plains of peat farther inland were formed as plants decayed on the shallow sea bottom. Throughout the Middle Ages piecemeal encroachment upon the edges of the silt land took place for agricultural use, but the whole expanse of peat land remained virtually undrained until the mid-17th century. Spalding, an ancient market town and now the administrative centre of the district, is a headquarters for the now elaborate drainage and flood-control system of the Fens.

This extremely fertile area grows fruit trees, cereals (especially wheat and barley), potatoes, and assorted market-garden produce. The largest bulb-growing area in England, specializing in tulips, is in the vicinity of Spalding. Agricultural implements, tractors, and canned food are produced at Spalding. Other small locales, such as Holbeach, Crowland, and Donnington, serve as agricultural market centres. Area 286 square miles (742 square km). Pop. (2001) 76,512.
