Situated in Moscow's Red Square, it occupies a huge, ornate building (constructed 1889–93) that once housed more than 1,000 shops. GUM now includes about 150 shops selling food, clothing, home appliances, watches and cameras, and many other goods. It functions more like a Western-style shopping mall than a department store and is a popular tourist attraction.

Situated on a traditional market site on the northeast side of Red Square in Moscow, the building originally known as the Upper Trading Arcade was designed by A.N. Pomerantsev and built in 1889–93 in a pseudo-Russian style over a hidden metal skeleton. In its original form it housed more than 1,000 shops. Reconstructed in 1953, the structure has three levels and now houses about 150 shops. The store, which functions more like a Western-style shopping centre than a department store, offers food, clothing, home appliances, watches and cameras, and many other goods. In addition to offering a full line of products, GUM became a tourist attraction for its remarkable size and ornate interior.
