Whitney Museum of American Art
a museum in New York which contains art from the beginning of the 20th century. The original museum was opened by the American artist and art collector Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875–1942) in 1931 and moved to its present building on Madison Avenue in 1966.

      collection in New York City of predominantly 20th-century American art, including painting, sculpture, and graphics. It was founded in 1930 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a sculptor and promoter of American art. The museum opened at a Greenwich Village location in 1931 and moved to West 54th Street in 1954 before relocating to its present building.

      Since 1966 the collection has been installed in a Madison Avenue building designed by Marcel Breuer. It contains the world's largest collection of paintings by Edward Hopper and has many sculptures by Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson.
