nine o’clock watershed
(in Britain) 9 o’clock at night, thought of as the time before which scenes of sex and violent behaviour should not be broadcast on television because they are not suitable for children to watch. The British television companies have said that this is their policy ‘under normal circumstances’, but there is no law that requires them to do this:

Many people rang in to complain that the programme should not have been shown before the nine o’clock watershed.
