river, noted for its scenic beauty, in the western United States. It rises on the slopes of Yount Peak in Wyoming and enters Yellowstone National Park. It feeds into Yellowstone Lake, below which it plunges 422 feet (129 metres) in two spectacular waterfalls, and enters the magnificent Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Leaving the park at Gardiner, Montana, the river turns north to Livingston, thence northeast past Billings, Miles City, and Glendive. It crosses the Montana–North Dakota border and, southwest of Williston, North Dakota, enters the Missouri River after a course of 692 miles (1,114 km). All its principal tributaries—the Bighorn (Bighorn River), Tongue (Tongue River), and Powder (Powder River) rivers—originate in the Absaroka and Wind River ranges and the Bighorn Mountains. The river system drains 70,000 square miles (181,300 square km). It has been developed extensively for irrigation.

The Yellowstone was first explored in 1806, when Lieutenant William Clark sailed down the river on his return from the Pacific Ocean. Manuel Lisa (Lisa, Manuel), an Indian trader, accompanied by John Colter (Colter, John), a trapper (said to be the first white man to see the geysers of Yellowstone Park), established the first trading post on the Yellowstone, at the mouth of the Bighorn River, in 1807.
