Bothwell,Fourth Earl of
Both·well (bŏthʹwĕl', -wəl, bŏthʹ-), Fourth Earl of Title of James Hepburn. 1536?-1578.
Scottish Protestant nobleman and third husband of Mary Queen of Scots, whose second husband, Lord Darnley, he murdered (1567). Acquitted of the crime, he wedded Mary and was soon forced into exile. He died while imprisoned in Denmark.
