Ri·el (rē-ĕlʹ), Louis. 1844-1885.
Canadian insurrectionist who organized the métis settlers of the Red River valley in a rebellion over their land rights (1869). After leading a similar uprising in Saskatchewan (1884-1885), he was captured and executed by Canadian authorities.
