North Ossetia or A·la·nia (ä-länʹyä)

An autonomous republic of southwest Russia in the central Caucasus bordering on Georgia. Annexed by Russia in the early 19th century, it later comprised the North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of the USSR (1936-1991).
