Nantwich

Nantwich

town (parish), Crewe and Nantwich borough, administrative and historic county of Cheshire, England, in the Weaver valley. The town dates from Roman times, when its salt deposits were important. Today it contains more than 100 buildings listed by the government as being of special architectural or historical interest. They date from the 16th to the 19th century and include some fine examples of half-timbered buildings, the most notable being Churche's Mansion. The large 14th-century church suggests the town's early prosperity. Pop. (2001) 12,515.
