genteel comedy

genteel comedy

▪ literary subgenre
early 18th-century subgenre of the comedy of manners that reflected the behaviour of the British upper class. Contrasted with Restoration comedy, genteel comedy was somewhat artificial and sentimental. Colley Cibber (Cibber, Colley)'s play The Careless Husband (1704) is an example of the type.
