      city and administrative centre, Chistopol rayon (sector), Tatarstan, west-central Russia. Formed in 1781, when the village of Chistoye Pole became the town of Chistopol, it is today a port along a large reservoir on the Volga River. The city's main industries are ship repairing, flour milling, sawmilling, and metalworking. A teachers college and a biological-research station are located in the city. Pop. (2006 est.) 61,742.
