Yard, Molly
▪ 2006
Mary Alexander
American political activist (b. July 6, 1912, Shanghai, China—d. Sept. 21, 2005, Pittsburgh, Pa.), served as president of the National Organization of Women from 1987 to 1991. Though she was 75 years old when she took office, the combative and tireless Yard nearly doubled membership in the organization, substantially increased its funding, and spearheaded a successful campaign to oppose the nomination of Robert Bork to associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. A lifelong activist for liberal causes, she campaigned for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, protection of abortion rights, and gay rights.
