      American newspaper editor (b. July 1, 1920, Cambridge, Mass.—d. March 14, 2002, Boston, Mass.), took over the post of Boston Globe editor from his father, Laurence Winship, in 1965 and served until 1984, raising the paper to the highest ranks and guiding it to 12 Pulitzer Prizes. As a result of his leadership of the Globe's opposition to the Vietnam War and its coverage of school desegregation in the 1970s, the paper became renowned for outstanding international and investigative reporting.
