John Stewart Williamson 

      American science-fiction writer (b. April 29, 1908, Bisbee, Arizona territory [now Arizona]—d. Nov. 10, 2006, Portales, N.M.), produced more than 50 books during a career that spanned the frontiers of science fiction and the early years of the 21st century. His first story, “The Metal Man,” appeared in 1928 in the magazine Amazing Stories, but it was his novel The Humanoids (1949), a cautionary tale about the danger of too much human reliance on technology, especially robots, that became his most famous. Another novel, Darker than You Think (1948), a horror story about werewolves, also became a classic. With Frederik Pohl, he wrote a number of books, including the compelling Starchild trilogy (1964–69). Williamson was the recipient of the 1975 Nebula Grand Master Award and the 1994 World Fantasy Life Achievement Award; he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1996.
