American pole-vaulter (b. June 22, 1915, Long Beach, Calif.—d. Nov.13, 2001, Fresno, Calif.), was the first in his sport to clear 4.57 m (15 ft), which he attained on April 13, 1940, with a bamboo pole, and he went on to break the outdoor record another six times. His outdoor record of 4.77 m (15 ft 73/4 in), set in 1942, and indoor record of 4.79 m (15 ft 81/2 in), set in 1943, were not broken until 1957 and 1959, respectively, and the men who broke them used more flexible aluminum poles.
