▪ 2003American writer and book critic (b. Sept. 17, 1915, Winthrop, Mass.—d. June 12, 2002, Chicago, Ill.), reviewed thousands of titles during her service as the editor of The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books from 1958 to 1985 and, through her support for books that reflected the realities of children's lives, came to be considered the most powerful and influential assessor of children's literature in the U.S. She also reviewed for the Saturday Review (1966–72) and the Chicago Tribune (1972–84), served on important committees, and wrote and edited numerous books.
