Smith, Linda

Smith, Linda
▪ 2007

British comedian (b. Jan. 25, 1958, Erith, Kent, Eng.—d. Feb. 27, 2006, London, Eng.), delighted millions with her warm, but often satiric, humour about the foibles of everyday life. Smith received a conventional education at the University of Sheffield and then toured (1983) with a professional theatre company before taking off on her own as a stand-up comic. She performed annually at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In the mid-1990s Smith joined the BBC, where she achieved renown for her regular appearances on the Radio 4 quiz shows Just a Minute, The News Quiz, and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. In addition, she produced her own Radio 4 series, A Brief History of Time Wasting, and served as a frequent guest on television programs, including Have I Got News for You, Mock the Week, and Room 101. In 2002 Smith's fans voted her the wittiest living person.
