Jeffrey L. Smith 
      American television personality (b. Jan. 22, 1939, Tacoma, Wash.—d. July 7, 2004, Seattle, Wash.), hosted the extremely popular TV cooking show The Frugal Gourmet on PBS from 1983 until accusations of sexual misconduct derailed his career in 1997. Smith was ordained a minister in the United Methodist Church in 1965 and became a chaplain at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, where he taught a course on food. In 1972 he opened and ran the Chaplain's Pantry, which served as a restaurant and store and offered cooking classes; he sold it in 1983. His television career began in 1973 with a local TV show called Cooking Fish Creatively; this program became The Frugal Gourmet, which in 1983 was picked up by the Chicago PBS station. Smith delighted viewers with his low-key, humorous, and educational approach, and his recipes were collected in more than 10 well-received cookbooks.
