Smiley, Tavis
▪ 2007

The ubiquitous media commentator Tavis Smiley scored a double success in 2006 with the publication of A Covenant with Black America. When the book hit number one on the New York Times list of paperback nonfiction best sellers during the week of April 23, it was also the first time a book from an African American publishing company had reached that mark. Smiley assembled key African American intellectuals to write essays for A Covenant with Black America, and they analyzed and proposed solutions to a wide range of the country's toughest problems, from criminal justice to health care to education. Smiley promoted the book with a national tour and secured pledges from both Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman to address these issues during the 2008 presidential campaign. Smiley had written seven other books, including Doing What's Right (2000) and Keeping the Faith (2002).

Smiley was born on Sept. 13, 1964, in Gulfport, Miss., and was one of 10 children. He grew up near Kokomo, Ind., and attended Indiana University at Bloomington but left in 1988 to work for Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley. (In 2003 he completed his Bachelor of Science degree.) Smiley became a national broadcaster in 1996 when he took positions as political commentator on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and as host of BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley on the Black Entertainment Television cable network. His interviews also began appearing on the national television networks ABC, NBC, and CNN. In 1999 he founded the Tavis Smiley Foundation, which convened an annual youth leadership summit. In 2004 he donated $1 million to Texas Southern University, which established the Tavis Smiley School of Communications and the Tavis Smiley Center for Professional Media Studies. That same year he also received an honorary doctorate in humane letters from the University of Indiana at Kokomo.

In December 2004 Smiley announced that he was resigning from the three-year-old Tavis Smiley Show on National Public Radio because he felt the network had not done enough to reach out to a diverse audience. He returned to the public radio airwaves one year later, however, with a new show over Public Radio International. In addition to his radio presence, Smiley launched an eponymous interview show in 2004 on Public Broadcasting Service television stations across the country; the program won the NAACP Image Awards in 2005 and 2006. The trailer for Smiley's TV show observed, “Frankly, we don't think the man sleeps.” Indeed.
