Sheckley, Robert

Sheckley, Robert
▪ 2006

American writer (b. July 16, 1928, Brooklyn, N.Y.—d. Dec. 9, 2005, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), was the author of a number of novels and short stories considered classics in the science-fiction genre; his works were noted for their dark humour and nihilistic outlook. Exceedingly prolific, he wrote or co-wrote some two dozen novels and at least 400 short stories. Among his most notable novels were The Status Civilization (1960), Journey Beyond Tomorrow (1962), Mindswap (1966), and Dimension of Miracles (1968). Perhaps his most famous short story, “The Seventh Victim” (1953), became the basis for the 1965 film La decima vittima (also known as The 10th Victim and The Tenth Victim). It was one of four stories by Sheckley that were made into films. Sheckley served as fiction editor of Omni magazine in the early 1980s. Many of his later stories were collected in Uncanny Tales (2003).
