Shakoor Rana

Shakoor Rana
▪ 2002

Pakistani cricket umpire (b. April 3, 1936, Lahore, India [now Lahore, Pak.]—d. April 9, 2001, Lahore), was at the centre of one of the most famous confrontations in cricket history—a finger-pointing shouting match with England captain Mike Gatting on the second day of the second Test in Faisalabad, Pak., in 1987. Shakoor, who had been a Test umpire since 1974, allegedly accused Gatting of cheating when the Englishman altered the position of a fielder while Pakistan was batting. The ensuing row caused play to be abandoned, and both Shakoor and Gatting demanded apologies. Eventually, Gatting was ordered to issue a written apology, which he grudgingly did. The match finally resumed on the fourth day, but cricket relations between England and Pakistan remained tense for more than a decade. A photograph of the confrontation, printed in newspapers around the world the next day, became one of the most frequently reproduced images in the sport.
