New Zealand author (b. June 4, 1932, Auckland, N.Z.—d. Oct. 10, 2004, Taumarunui, N.Z.), was celebrated for historical novels about his native country. His trilogy on the Maori wars of the 19th century—Season of the Jew (1986), Monday's Warriors (1990), and The House of Strife (1993)—was widely regarded as his best work. Shadbolt attended Auckland University College and initially worked as a journalist and as a documentary film director and scriptwriter. His early short stories, which often focused on the clash between modern New Zealand and its traditional culture, were collected in The New Zealanders (1959) and Summer Fires and Winter Country (1963). Shadbolt's novels set in contemporary New Zealand included Among the Cinders (1965), This Summer's Dolphin (1969), Strangers and Journeys (1972), and A Touch of Clay (1974). In 1980 he turned to historical fiction with The Lovelock Version, a chronicle of a pioneer family. Shadbolt was a frequent contributor to magazines that included National Geographic. His other nonfiction work included The Shell Guide to New Zealand (1968) and One of Ben's (1993), an autobiography. Shadbolt's works garnered numerous literary awards, including New Zealand Book of the Year four times; in 1989 he was made CBE.
