Schlesinger, John Richard

Schlesinger, John Richard
▪ 2004

British director (b. Feb. 16, 1926, London, Eng.—d. July 25, 2003, Palm Springs, Calif.), won a best director Academy Award for his first American film, Midnight Cowboy (1969), which also was the only X-rated film to win the best picture Oscar. Considered one of the directors of British New Wave social realism, he had already made his mark with such films as Billy Liar (1963), Darling (1965), and Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), and following Midnight Cowboy he alternated between Britain and the U.S., counting Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) and Marathon Man (1976) among his more successful later efforts. Schlesinger also directed for television and the theatre. He was made CBE in 1970.
