      American illustrator (b. April 8, 1939, Philadelphia, Pa.—d. Nov. 19, 2004, Lebanon, N.H.), illustrated more than 150 children's books, including Caldecott Medal winner St. George and the Dragon (1984; written by Margaret Hodges). During the 1970s she developed a reputation as a talented and versatile illustrator for Cricket, a children's magazine. Later she provided art for tales by such noted writers as Hans Christian Andersen, Mark Twain, and John Updike (A Child's Calendar, 1999). She also wrote several children's books.
