Sabanci, Sakip
▪ 2005

Turkish businessman and philanthropist (b. April 7, 1933, Akcakaya, Kayseri, Turkey—d. April 10, 2004, Istanbul, Turkey), was regarded as the wealthiest man in Turkey. Known affectionately as “Sakip Aga” (a title of respect), he had the appeal of a populist despite heading one of the top 100 family-owned businesses in the world. Sabanci's conglomerate, Sabanci Holding, acquired interests in banking, automobiles, food and tobacco, tourism, and chemicals, while his philanthropic umbrella group, Vaska, managed more than 100 charitable organizations in Turkey. Sabanci University's Sakip Sabanci Museum, which opened in 2002 in his historic former home in Istanbul, housed his magnificent collection of paintings and Ottoman calligraphy.
