      American novelist (b. March 31, 1935, New York, N.Y.—d. Aug. 9, 2005, New York City), examined the lives and experiences of modern women as they coped with loneliness, love, and their sexuality. Her best-known book, Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1975; filmed 1977)—inspired by a New York City schoolteacher's murder at the hands of a man she had picked up in a singles bar—became a best seller. Another best seller was August (1983).
