Reve, Gerard Kornelis van het
▪ 2007

Dutch writer (b. Dec. 14, 1923, Amsterdam, Neth.—d. April 8, 2006, Zulte, Belg.), was noted for his virtuoso style, sardonic humour, and controversial subject matter, which included such topics as homosexuality and sadism. Reve attended (1945–47) the Amsterdam school of graphic arts, after which he worked as a reporter for Het Parool, a national daily newspaper. His first novel, De avonden (1947), which was published under the pseudonym Simon van het Reve, was considered by many to be the most representative work of fiction of the Dutch post-World War II generation. An early novella, Werther Nieland (1949), was highly popular, as were his short-story collections Vier wintervertellingen (1970; published first in English as The Acrobat and Other Stories, 1956) and Tien vrolijke verhalen (1961). Employing a technique he called epistolary autobiography, Reve produced Op weg naar het einde (1963) and Nader tot U (1966), in which he explored both his homosexuality and his conversion to Roman Catholicism. Other works included De taal der liefde (1972), Lieve jongens (1973), Ik had hem lief (1975), Bezorgde ouders (1988; Parents Worry, 1990), and a series of books of correspondence. Reve won the P.C. Hooftprijs in 1968.
