      French political activist (b. Dec. 1, 1920, St.-Céré, France—d. Aug. 27, 2003, La Bastide-L'Evêque, France), created a short-lived movement in the 1950s the name of which, Poujadisme, remained shorthand for a kind of provincial right-wing nationalism. In 1953 Poujade, who owned a book and stationery shop, started the movement as a shopkeepers' revolt against high taxes, large commercial interests, and bureaucracy. The resulting organization, the Union for the Defense of Tradesmen and Artisans, became a national movement by the following year, and in the election of 1956, the Poujadist party won 52 seats in the National Assembly (one held by Jean-Marie Le Pen). The movement collapsed shortly thereafter, though Poujade remained politically active.
