rose through the ranks at Ford Motor Co. during a nearly 40-year career to become (2005) CEO of the U.S.-based automaker's luxury Jaguar Land Rover division. Polites received a first-class degree in economics from Monash University in the greater Melbourne area and joined Ford in 1970 as a product planner. He quit management to run (1988–99) a large Sydney dealership, where he was thrice named Ford Australia Dealer of the Year. He sold the dealership and rejoined management as president of Ford Australia (1999–2004) and then as vice president of marketing for Ford's European operations (2004–05) before taking charge of Jaguar Land Rover. Polites was credited with revamping Ford's lineup of cars in Australia, cutting expensive executive perks, and forging closer relations with workers.
