was named (1988) by the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing among the all-time 50 greatest NASCAR drivers. He captured 21 NASCAR titles during his career (1964 and 1969–88), including two premier races—the Daytona 500 in 1975 and the World 600 in 1980—and was crowned Winston Cup champion in 1973. Parsons, a onetime cab driver, had a folksy personality that was well suited to his second career as a sports announcer and analyst; in 1996 he won an Emmy Award for his reportage for ESPN. He was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame in 1998.
