James Francis Pantridge
Irish-born cardiologist (b. Oct. 3, 1916, Hillsborough, Ire. [now N.Ire.]—d. Dec. 26, 2004), developed (1965) the first portable heart defibrillator, a life-saving device for providing rapid emergency treatment to heart-attack victims. Defibrillators, which are used to apply an electric shock to the chest to overcome ventricular fibrillation, a typically fatal irregular rhythm of the heart that often follows a heart attack, were previously available only in hospitals. He was made CBE in 1978.
