      ("BOB"), British association football (soccer) player and manager who, at the time of his retirement in 1983, was the most successful team manager in the history of English soccer; between 1974, when he took command of the Liverpool Football Club, and 1983 he steered Liverpool to six League titles, three League Cups, three European Cups, one UEFA Cup, and the 1977 European Super Cup (b. Jan. 23, 1919—d. Feb. 14, 1996).
