Ngor, Haing S.

Ngor, Haing S.
▪ 1997

Cambodian physician and actor (b. 1950?, Cambodia—d. Feb. 25, 1996, Los Angeles, Calif.), won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in The Killing Fields (1984). In his portrayal of Dith Pran—who acted as assistant to New York Times correspondent Sydney Schanberg in Cambodia and risked his life to save journalists' lives when the Khmer Rouge seized power in 1975 but was left behind, taken prisoner, and tortured before escaping—he relived his own ordeal. When the Khmer Rouge arrested and tortured Ngor, he pretended to be a taxi driver because intellectuals were being executed; he had to hide the fact that he was a physician even when his wife was dying in childbirth. After the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia (1979), he escaped to Thailand and worked in the refugee camps before moving (1980) to the U.S. He was working as a job counselor for refugees in Los Angeles when he was chosen for the role in The Killing Fields. Ngor appeared in a few other films, most notably Heaven and Earth (1993), and became active in the campaign to bring those who conducted the massacres to justice. He lectured widely and helped form two organizations that aided Cambodian refugees still in camps. Ngor was shot to death while being robbed outside his home.
