Mushtaq Ali, Syed
▪ 2006

Indian cricketer (b. Dec. 17, 1914, Indore, India—d. June 18, 2005, Indore), was a cavalier right-hand opening batsman and slow left-arm bowler who was the first Indian to score a Test century away from home, at Old Trafford in Manchester, Eng., in 1936. Although Mushtaq and Vijay Merchant averaged 83.43 as an opening pair in four Tests (in 1936 and 1946), Mushtaq fell afoul of the selectors when he withdrew from the 1947–48 tour of Australia because of the death of his brother; he played in a total of only 11 Test matches. In his first-class career (1934–64), Mushtaq played in 226 matches, scored 13,213 runs at an average of 35.90, with 30 centuries and a high score of 233, and took 162 wickets at an average of 29.34, with a best bowling analysis of seven for 108. In 11 Test matches (1934–52), he scored 612 runs at an average of 32.21, with two centuries and a high score of 112, and took three wickets at an average of 67.33, with a best bowling analysis of one for 45.
