      New Zealand-born American criminologist (b. Oct. 1, 1923, Auckland, N.Z.—d. Feb. 21, 2004, Chicago, Ill.), spent 55 years in academe—40 of them at the University of Chicago, where he served as founding director of the Center for Studies in Criminal Justice, dean of the law school, and professor of law and criminology. During his career he wrote numerous books and articles and through them built an international reputation as an expert on criminal justice systems and the shortcomings of prison systems.
