      (THOMAS GARRISON MORFIT), U.S. television personality (b. Jan. 31, 1915, Baltimore, Md.—d. Nov. 29, 1993, Hilton Head Island, S.C.), was the winsome television host whose folksy charm attracted viewers to the variety program "The Garry Moore Show" (1950-64 and 1966-67) and such quiz forums as "I've Got a Secret" (1952-64) and "To Tell the Truth" (1969-76). Moore, who was distinguished by a trademark bow tie and crew cut, quit high school to work in radio, where he met Durward Kirby, who became his sidekick and announcer on his variety show. That pioneering program helped launch the careers of such comedians as Carol Burnett, Don Knotts, and Jonathan Winters. "The Garry Moore Show," which reached the height of its popularity in the 1950s, went off the air after losing ground with its younger audience. Moore sailed around the world before the show reappeared in 1966 against "Bonanza" and was canceled because of poor ratings. Moore left television in 1977 after developing throat cancer.
