Moore, Francis Daniels

      American surgeon (b. April 17, 1913, Evanston, Ill.—d. Nov. 24, 2001, Westwood, Mass.), was the chief surgeon at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston when in 1954 a team under his direction performed the first successful human organ transplant—a kidney transplant between identical twins. Moore graduated from Harvard University in 1935 and from Harvard Medical School in 1939. After an internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, he worked at Brigham Hospital from 1948 to 1976. He also served as professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School until his retirement in 1981. In addition, Moore helped develop procedures for the care of postoperative patients. His memoirs, A Miracle & a Privilege: Recounting a Half Century of Surgical Advance, appeared in 1995.
