Merlyn Rees
British politician (b. Dec. 18, 1920, Cilfynydd, Glamorgan, Wales—d. Jan. 5, 2006, London, Eng.), served in the Labour cabinet under Prime Ministers Harold Wilson and James Callaghan during the 1970s. After serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II, Rees graduated from the London School of Economics. He entered politics while teaching school in the 1950s but quit teaching to organize the 1962 Festival of Labour in London. He was first elected to Parliament in 1963 and became parliamentary private secretary to Callaghan, then shadow chancellor. In 1972 Rees was designated Labour's spokesman for Northern Ireland, and in 1974 he became secretary of state for Northern Ireland in Wilson's government. In this position Rees ended the practice of detention of prisoners without trial and of imposing different rules for political prisoners. With the election in 1976 of Callaghan as prime minister, Rees became home secretary, a position he held until the Labour government was defeated in the 1979 general election. He legally added his given name to his surname in 1992, shortly before he was made a life peer.
