British biochemist (b. March 1, 1910, London, Eng.—d. July 28, 2002, Llangarron, Herefordshire, Eng.), shared with Richard L.M. Synge the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1952 for their joint work in the development of partition chromatography, a sophisticated analytic technique by which samples of a mixture of closely related chemicals such as amino acids can be separated for identification and further study. Martin gained a Ph.D. (1936) in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge before joining the staff at the Wool Industries Research Association (WIRA) in 1938. At WIRA he and Synge initially used a liquid-liquid system in which chloroform was percolated through a column of water-saturated silica gel. They published a paper describing the breakthrough technique in the Biochemical Journal in 1941. Three years later Martin, working with R. Consden and A.H. Gordon, developed paper partition chromatography, an even simpler method using a thin column of paper to hold one liquid stationary while a second liquid flowed over it. After leaving WIRA in 1946, Martin worked at the Boots Pure Drug Co. (1946–48), the Medical Research Council (1948–52), and the National Institute of Medical Research (1952–56), where he supervised A.T. James's work in gas-liquid chromatography. He later served as director of Abbotsbury Laboratories (1959–70), was a consultant at Wellcome Research Laboratories (1970–73), and taught chemistry at the University of Sussex, Brighton (1973–78), and the University of Houston, Texas (1974–79). Martin was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1950 and was made CBE in 1980.
