      American sports executive (b. Aug. 14, 1916, New York, N.Y.—d. Oct. 25, 2005, Rye, N.Y.), as head of personnel, assembled the New York Giants championship football teams of the late 1950s and early '60s, and as the owner of the team, he contributed to the longtime success of the National Football League by agreeing in 1961 to an equal split of TV profits between all teams regardless of market size. He became the ballboy for the Giants in 1925, the year that his father, Tim, founded that professional football franchise. Mara was renowned for his gentlemanly demeanour and for his low-key but hands-on approach as an owner. In 1997 he followed his father, a charter member, into the Professional Football Hall of Fame.
