American journalist (b. Jan. 8, 1915, Waterman, Ill.—d. June 19, 2004, Glen Ellyn, Ill.), had a more than 40-year career in journalism most notable for his tenure as editor of the Chicago Tribune from 1969 to 1979. Under his guidance the newspaper was transformed from a publication with a decidedly Republican slant into a less-partisan and more influential paper.
