Khoo Teck Puat
▪ 2005

Singaporean financier and hotelier (b. Jan. 13, 1917, Singapore—d. Feb. 21, 2004, Singapore), was the richest person in Singapore, with an estimated fortune of $2.6 billion; Forbes magazine ranked Khoo as the 137th richest person in the world in 2003. His 13.5% stake in the British-based Standard Chartered Bank made him the bank's largest single shareholder and was considered Khoo's most valuable asset at the time of his death. One of the founders of Malayan Banking (now known as Maybank), Khoo went on to serve briefly (1964–65) as a Malaysian senator before Singapore declared its independence. He subsequently acquired a string of hotels that included the Goodwood Park Hotel—considered a national landmark in Singapore. In later life Khoo was well known for his philanthropy.
