Ji Pengfei

Ji Pengfei
▪ 2001

Chinese diplomat (b. 1910, Linyi, Shanxi province, China—d. Feb. 10, 2000, Beijing, China), served from 1982 to 1990 as director of Hong Kong and Macau affairs in the State Council, playing a lead role in the negotiations with Britain over the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty. He was also chairman of the committee that drafted the Basic Law, the constitution governing the relationship between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. As a young man, he participated in the Long March, the historic trek of the Chinese Communists in 1934–35 that resulted in the relocation of the Communist revolutionary base from southeastern China to northwestern China and in the emergence of Mao Zedong as the undisputed party leader. Mao appointed Ji ambassador to East Germany in 1950, a post he held for five years. He served as China's vice foreign minister from 1955 to 1972 and as foreign minister from 1972 to 1974. He retired from public life after the Basic Law was approved in 1990.
