      Barbadian cricketer who was a stylish and reliable opening batsman for Barbados, Enfield in England's Lancashire League, and the West Indies, for which he also served as vice-captain; Hunte scored 8,916 first-class runs (average 43.92), including 16 centuries, in his 17-year career (1950–67), with 3,245 runs (average 45.06), including 8 centuries, in 44 Test matches. His personal high score of 260 was achieved in his debut Test series against Pakistan in 1958 during a record-setting second-wicket partnership of 446 with Gary (later Sir Garfield) Sobers, who went on to score a then-record 365 not out. Hunte, a longtime spokesman for the Moral Re-Armament Movement, later worked in South Africa to help develop the game of cricket among young blacks; he was knighted in 1998 (b. May 9, 1932, Shorey Village, St. Andrew, Barbados—d. Dec. 3, 1999, Sydney, Australia).
