portrayed mercenary-turned-secret agent Mike Gambit in the tongue-in-cheek television spy series The New Avengers (1976–77), a popular sequel to the earlier cult favourite The Avengers. After six years in the merchant navy as a teenager, Hunt took up acting, including a stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He first gained attention with a 1974 guest role on the cult TV show Doctor Who and as the cheeky footman Frederick for two seasons (1974–75) on Upstairs, Downstairs. Hunt later alternated between television and stage roles.
