joined the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in 1969, becoming an important street fighter, arms smuggler, and strategist; later, as an IRA leader in the Maze prison, he led protests, including a 53-day hunger strike in 1980. Hughes was captured in 1973 but escaped six months later; after being recaptured in 1974, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and returned to the Maze. After the British government in 1976 reclassified the prisoners as criminals, Hughes led the campaign for the return of the status of political prisoner. In 1977 he began the “dirty protest,” in which prisoners refused to wash or use prison toilets. Hughes was released from prison in 1986, and he opposed the peace process.
