Bernard Hughes 

      American actor (b. July 16, 1915, Bedford Hills, N.Y.—d. July 11, 2006, New York, N.Y.), was a veteran character actor who appeared in more than 400 plays and in dozens of films and television shows. Hughes, who made his Broadway debut in 1935, won a Tony Award for best actor for his performance as the curmudgeonly patriarch in Hugh Leonard's play Da (1978); he reprised his role for the 1988 film version. His other stage credits included A Majority of One (1959), Nobody Loves an Albatross (1963), The Good Doctor (1973), Prelude to a Kiss (1990), and Waiting in the Wings (1999). On TV he appeared in four soap operas and the series Doc (1975–76), The Cavanaughs (1986–89), and Blossom (1991–95), and he won an Emmy Award in 1977 for his portrayal of a senile judge on Lou Grant. His film credits included Midnight Cowboy (1969), Where's Poppa? (1970), The Hospital (1971), TRON (1982), The Lost Boys (1987), and Sister Act 2 (1993).
