Horn, Shirley Valerie

Horn, Shirley Valerie
▪ 2006
American jazz artist (b. May 1, 1934, Washington, D.C.—d. Oct. 20, 2005, Cheverly, Md.), sang ballads in a breathy contralto voice and unforced style with a subtle sensitivity to space and dynamics; the result was singularly intimate vocal music, enhanced by her own piano accompaniments. She recorded five albums in the 1960s but did not unveil her mature style until her 1978 trio album A Lazy Afternoon; she became popular through a series of Verve albums, including You Won't Forget Me (1990), in which she was joined by trumpeters Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis, and especially Here's to Life (1992). In 1998 she won a Grammy for I Remember Miles. Although she appeared after 1980 in international festivals and jazz spots, she performed primarily in Washington-area clubs throughout her career.
