Jerome Albert Link Heinz 
      American opera singer (b. Nov. 8, 1921, Hollywood, Calif.—d. Feb. 4, 2003, New York, N.Y), was a respected bass who sang for 41 years at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He made his professional debut in the role of Monterone in Verdi's Rigoletto at the San Francisco Opera House in 1941 and first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in 1946 in Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov. In 868 appearances at the Met he portrayed 45 characters in 39 operas, and he made numerous appearances in opera houses in Europe and South America. Hines was known for his rich and flexible voice as well as his imposing stage presence. Among his best-known roles were those of Ramfis in Verdi's Aida, Méphistophélès in Gounod's Faust, and the title role in Boris Godunov.
