      American rabbi and intellectual (b. June 9, 1921, Lubaczow, Pol.—d. April 17, 2006, Westwood, N.J.), advocated for a range of causes, including the creation of Israel and civil rights for minorities. He served as president (1972–78) of the American Jewish Congress and as vice president (1975–91) of the World Jewish Congress. In the 1960s he participated in a dialogue with the Vatican in hopes of improving Catholic-Jewish relations. Following the Six-Day War of 1967, he called for the creation of a Palestinian state. His many books included The Zionist Idea (1959) and Being Jewish in America (1979).
